Chess should feel like yours

It started on a long train ride. One of us was trying to review a game they'd just lost — flipping between an engine in one tab, a puzzle trainer in another, and a coaching article that never quite answered the real question: why was that move a mistake? By the time the train pulled in, the game was forgotten and the lesson was lost.

We were a small group of chess players who also happened to build software for a living — the kind of people who play blitz between meetings and argue about openings over coffee. We kept coming back to the same idea: the tools to become a better player already existed, but they were fragmented, intimidating, and often expensive. Beginners bounced off them. Improvers plateaued. The joy of the game got buried under menus and paywalls.

So we started building the platform we wished we had. A board you could open in a second, with no sign-up and no friction. Opponents that felt genuinely human across every level — from a nervous first-timer to a ruthless master. Coaching that spoke like a patient friend instead of a spreadsheet. Puzzles drawn from real games. And an honest read on your rating, so you always knew where you stood and what to work on next.

We named it VeloChess — velofor speed and momentum — because that's how improvement should feel: quick to start, and always moving forward. What began as a weekend prototype grew into something we're genuinely proud of, shaped move by move by the players who use it.
